In 1986, the Nobel Laureate, Dr. Amartya Sen, had served India the 1st warning. He had estimated that 37 million women were “missing” from the country. Women who should have been part of the population but could not be accounted for.
The voiding however continued, even escalated. And now, 22 years later on, it is approximated about fifty million women have been consistently purged from India’s population, targeted only because they were female. This is perhaps what goes far one of the worst genocides in human history. And it is mum. And in progress.
Female infanticide has long-run, historical roots in India. It carries on to be a rearing pattern in many rural regions of India, largely because it is more inexpensive for the agrarian poor than the method more prevailing in towns and urban center* -- that is sex-selected abortions. A mid-wife is paid only about Rs 100/- (U.S. $2.50) to kill a newborn baby girl. Babies are strangled, buried alive, submerged in buckets of milk, or fed poisonous substance. In some parts of India that job is barred to the father or fatherlike grandmother who does it for free.
Female feticide has now become an uncurbed phenomenon in India. Even though it is banned for doctors to break the sex of the fetus during an sonography, still about million female foetuses are selectively aborted in India annually. This rate is anticipated to rise to an alerting 2-5 million/year over the new few years.
Also on the climb are the murders of young wedded women, whose relatives-in-law’ asks for dowry money seem insatiable. Dubbed as ‘dowry deaths’ – these murders are in general gang-murders involving the hubby, his parents, and occasionally his siblings. The victim is drenched with kerosine and set aflame in staged kitchen “accidents.” Or forced to consume sleeping capsule*, or hanged in presented “suicides.” It has been calculated that at least 25000 women are murdered this manner, each year. The 1000s who don’t die, live-on badly burnt and maimed, their lives destroyed.
The viewpoint of this petition is to treat this as a situation of extensive and crimson, lawlessness, perpetuated largely due to the indifference of the country’s system of law and order.

TO: The Government of India, The OHCHR, The UNICEF, The UNIFEM, The UNFPA, CEDAW, The EU and The G8.
We the undersigned, strongly condemn the practises that have directed to the elimination of millions of girls and women from India’s population, and hold the government of India responsible for failing to protect the lives of its female citizens.
We additional contend, on grounds of human rights, that prompt and effectual action be brought by the government, by the implementation of speedy action task forces, to halt this femicide. We also insist the authorities officially commit to a time-line within which the affiliated practices of female feticide, female infanticide and dowry murders will be effectively arrested through the rigorous enforcement of existing laws and a stringent accountability on the part of India’s hospitals, government offices, and law enforcement agencies.
We further urge international human rights bodies and other governments to join in this effort to persuade the government of India to acknowledge and honor the call of this petition.
