Luc Robitaill wore a Kings sweater for 14 of his 19 seasons in the NHL. He retired as the leading goal scorer in team history and is the only member of the Los Angeles Kings to win a Calder Trophy. More than any other player his name and face are synonymous with Kings hockey. His induction into the Hall of Fame is simply a matter of time.
And yet... Wayne Gretzky, a man who never played a game inside STAPLES Center and who coaches a division rival (for now), has been honored with a statue. A statue that some believe is cursed, I might add.
Well the time has come to rectify this karmic error. I would never suggest that STAPLES Center remove the statues of Wayne Gretzky or Magic Johnson but there should be something to differentiate the different eras in Los Angeles. It is with this in mind that I propose that a statue of Luc Robitaille be erected inside of STAPLES Center. There is ample room for such a project and it could serve as a starting point for a new tradition in Los Angeles. Let the Star Plaza and the Arch of Fame recognize those whose careers came before the STAPLES Center and honor those who played inside the STAPLES Center.... inside STAPLES Center.
