Pat White's accomplishments as a Mountaineer Football Player as well as his accomplishments as an ambassador for the University more than merits the Retirement of No. 5. Among his many accomplishments he has done the following on the field: He's the greatest rushing quarterback in NCAA major college history, with 4,480 yards. He set 25 school, Big East Conference or NCAA major college records. He had a hand in 103 touchdowns (47 rush, 56 pass). White led the Mountaineers (who were 40-9 in his four seasons) to Sugar, Gator, Fiesta and Meineke Car Care bowl victories (over Georgia, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma and North Carolina) and was the most valuable player in the last three of those triumphs. Additionally, he was the Senior Bowl MVP as he lead the best Seniors in America in that storied allstar game. Action on this should be delayed. He has eximplified himself as both an on the field winner and as an off the field class act. He has not just talked the talk of "Hungry and Humble" he has walked the walk.
We the signatorees of this petition recognize that the criteria for having a number retired "requires" the following: a WVU player needs to be a consensus All-America selection or a two-time All-America first team selection "as chosen by an accepted or primary organization or the MVP of a national championship team. The signatorees want the integrity of this honor to be kept in tact, and while Patrick does not meet this arbitrary standard he has exceeded the accomplishments of any Mountaineer to ever have donned the old gold and blue. If this committe does not retire his Jeresy that very integrity will be lost on all previous and subsequent recipiants. As such we implore you to take the necessary action to retire his jersey.
