We feel that the opportunity to play Tag, as well as Soccer and Basketball Games is deserved by the students of South Elementary for a variety of reasons, including:
• These activities allow for more choices and more styles of play on recess, better accommodating the needs and interests of ALL children.
• With proper guidelines and supervision, these activities can be safe, fun, and exciting for children, adding to their enjoyment of the school day.
• They allow students an opportunity for cardiovascular fitness each day of the school week.
• Students can benefit during sporting situations by working together, helping and teaching one another, and utilizing conflict resolution skills to solve their own disagreements when they arise.
• These games encourage students to leave the densely populated blacktop area of the school, to better utilize the grassy areas of the playground
According to the NATIONAL HEALTH, MENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR SCHOOLS, schools should “provide a variety of opportunities for physical activity in addition to physical education, that meet all students' needs and interests.” They should “offer a diverse selection of competitive and noncompetitive, structured and unstructured activities during school recess”.
