Save Rose Rock 2010

To/Against/For: To broaden our options for the headlining band.

This year's selection for the headlining performance at Rose Rock 2010 held at the College of Saint Rose is for 5 bands: Augustana, Metro Station, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Secondhand Serenade, and We The Kings.

I understand the process in which these bands were selected, having multiple voting processes and eliminations of bands or groups that have too high of a budget or have too limiting of a schedule. But I think it is unfair that this process is not made more public to the student body, and/or advertised better. There were no flyers posted around the campus about the vote for Rose Rock, no notifications for when this would happen, and it can be guaranteed that if more students knew about when this voting was going to happen, more people would have showed up, and this problem could have been avoided. Even if students knew they could email the Head of the Rose Rock Committee (part of SA) with suggestions, more people would have done so.

I am not writing or trying to start a petition because these bands are "bad" or because they are of an alternative genre. I am writing this to try to get variety onto the 5 bands to vote from on Blackboard. These bands all are within the same genre (respectively) and have similar sounds. It would be unfair to remove all these bands which were selected by people who wanted to see them play. It is also unfair to the headlining band to show up and to have no one stay and listen to them, or disrespected.

My proposition is to have a re-vote, and to notify students of options they have to put in their vote and voice who they want to see. Some options are: holding a meeting, using email, Blackboard, Facebook, or all the above. This way, if everyone gets to vote, no one can complain. I think that the student body wants to be a part of one of the biggest events of the year, and they should be allowed to. This can be a first step and it is not too late to change this issue.

By signing this petition, we as the Saint Rose student body can try to make Rose Rock, what we all pay for in our tuition and fees, more fair to everyone. Thank you for helping make the Saint Rose Difference.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Stephenson and Eileen Matuck

Re: Re: Shane Your rant seems more like a personal thing than any real argument otherwise. Grow up.
Re: Shane Shane, I'm sorry for the confusion, I meant to say if you were involved with the events that SA puts on then you would have the right to voice your opinion about them. However, you are not in SA and I don't understand why you think, or why any of you that signed this petition have the right to judge how SA operates. SA hasn't started a petition or judged MEISA on any of their events. I'm pretty sure if I showed up to a MEISA meeting at the end of a semester and wanted to voice my opinion that I hate how you're doing something and started a petition on campus you would all tell me to fuck off-because I am not a member and have no right to say that. I wasn't saying that booking a band was the hard work, but if you can remember there were other things at Rose Rock that takes time to plan. I'm glad that you aren't in SA but yet seem to be so knowledgeable in how we operate. The first voting process was for SA members as it HAS ALWAYS BEEN! And for the record, MEISA should have had their representative at the meeting to state that MEISA has suddenly taken an interest in Rose Rock and wants to help out-oh wait that's a bunch of bullshit and you're all just pissed because you don't like these bands so you're going to cover your asses and pretend like you care. Also, I hope you all realize that you're arguing over ONE band, and that this event is all day and you could have had a say in what other bands perform. I've been here for 7 semesters, and I have to go to the eye doctor now because apparently I'm blind and never saw how much MEISA so desperately wanted to be involved with Rose Rock. I would also like to personally thank you all for making my last semester a drama filled one and for causing so much unnecessary tension.
Shane M. The reason I am upset is because of the following, and I quote: "Maybe if you were involved in what goes on with campus activities you would have had a say who's coming here.." - I am involved. I'm in MEISA. We put on real music events all the time. Thank you very much. "being that the voting took place last semester and you're just realizing now you don't like the bands. There were two pages worth of bands that were voted on, and this was the outcome-it wasn't just one person who decided to pick these bands." - Thank you for proving our point. Like you said, there was a voting process...it just so happens NO ONE knew about it. That's what this petition is about. AND For the record, MEISA puts on shows all the time...it takes less than two weeks to book a band as long as they're not on tour. Thus, contrary to what one person said, it is NOT hard to book a band and organize a concert. End of rant
Scott Watson Seems pretty crappy that all the bands are the same genre. We need more variety to choose from
  Angela Need more variety.
gee dee I do like some of the bands but I have heard that they arent that good live. I do feel bad that people are complaining so mucu cause they process of picking a band is really hard, I personally would of LOVED all time low to come, but thats just me.
T Dogg Picking 5 bands from the same genre is much like falling prey to the same homogeny that plagues corporate radio. There are so many different types of great music out there, just like different ideas, beliefs and skin colors.
Debra Im not in SA but I feel bad for them, yeah I agree all the bands kinda sound the same, but ganging up on the people that are putting all this hard work into the event is not the solution.Maybe everyone will take this experience and next year offer to help out with this event beforehand? If you really want to be a part of this event, you have to go to SA meetings, and you can't say that you want to have a re-vote or want to be better informed of the voting process...I'm sure every other club on campus would agree that they would tell someone to f off that wasn't in their club but wanted a say in one of their major events?Everyone needs to chill, and realize that you all look like dicks and your causing so much stress and unnecessary tension around campus.
... im sorry the student below is pissed, i dont think tha was the intention of the creators of the petition.it does suck all the bands are alike, but hey shit happens guys.i dont think SA people did this on purpose.rose rock is an awesome day where everyone always gets along, ive gone for the past 3 years, and i dont want this year to be any different.cant we put this beef away?
Pissed off Student Get a life people, do you really have nothing better to do than to stir the pot?. Maybe if you were involved in what goes on with campus activities you would have had a say who's coming here, being that the voting took place last semester and you're just realizing now you don't like the bands. There were two pages worth of bands that were voted on, and this was the outcome-it wasn't just one person who decided to pick these bands. Rose Rock is your day to get drunk and listen to music, you don't want to do any of the planning or hard work that goes into it. This is absurd, just shut up about it already, this petition doesn't even work, and it isn't going to do anything. And for the record, the same process that was done last year was done this year, and I didn't see any complaints last year. Grow up people.
