Redevelopment by force

Our society AGM was held today. Again, redevelopment was discussed. The consent letters were obtained by the society earlier. We were told that only a handful of members are against redev (me included). On examining the file, a total of 22 consent letters were found where the members clearly have refused redev. Balance 70 letters are not disclosed. (Total 92 members).
It was declared that since majority is for redev, we will go ahead with it.
Now, the committee has not signed the m-20 bond. The conveyance for the land has not been done.
Our building is in very good structural condition. No one in his right frame of mind will ever say that redev is necessary. We have just spent a huge amount of Rs1crore on renovation. (Plastering, painting, compound tiling, lighting, tiling of stairwells and replacing of 3 lifts).
Truly amazing that a housing society created under the Cooperative Society Act is being ruled by greed. Some individuals want more space and some want money. In the bargain, members who wish to stay in the same place are being displaced. Today, real estate sector is doing well. What happens if tomorrow, the market tanks? The builder may not want to continue the project if the new property does not sell at the current high rates.
My petition goes out to all societies and to the municipal authorities. BMC has to stop favouring builders and sanctioning plans without ascertaining whether the structure needs redev. Societies have to understand the non-profit nature of their constitution and not get swayed by the current madness for redevelopment.
