Although no definitive definition exist for zero tolerance, universally it is interpreted as meaning equal punishment for the same infraction. Zero tolerance does not take into consideration the severity of the offense, whether or not an individual committed previous violations, or extenuating circumstances. If two individuals commit a violation of the same offense they will be punished equally.
Lincoln University has adopted a zero-tolerance policy. Though Lincoln University has adopted this policy, there are many incongruities that exist between the universal meaning of the policy and Lincoln’s meaning. Not everyone that commits the same infraction is punished equally. This is not zero tolerance. When student whose offenses are immensely dissimilar are treated the same, far worse, or unjustifiably better than another, a sense of being treated fair is undermined.
Lincoln University needs to issue a new name for its “zero tolerance policy”, because it is not such a policy. Conflicts in policies and inappropriateness in sanctions leave plenty of room for students and staff member to litigate, and likely triumph. There are students on campus, testaments to the fact that they have been given a “break”, while other students, who have been unfairly suspended or expelled, are testaments to the non existence of a zero tolerance policy.
When zero tolerance first took effect, the goal was to reprimand criminals. Lincoln University students are not criminals; everyone has lapses in judgment but to punish them as a criminal for it is unjustifiable. Students have the same frailties as administration, yet it seems that students are held to a much higher standard than those who are in a position to issue such harsh reprimands.
