We, the staff, students and communities of UCT and SHAWCO are concerned about the current situation of people who have been displaced by xenophobic violence and remain in the three camps that have been officially closed.
There are reports that these people (many of whom are refugees) have no provision of/access to food, medical care, electricity, water, security, transport and other needed assistance. There are also reports that volunteers and volunteer organisations are being turned away from the three sites. There are also reports that many of the people in these sites have tried to reintegrate into their original communities and have faced intimidation and violence by both locals and police alike. They remain in the sites with no other options.
We urgently need to confirm the conditions of the camps and those housed in them. We call for the camps to be opened to the media and NGO/CBO sector to assess and aid in any way we can.
We call for an approach to all communities in Cape Town, regardless of nationality, race, or gender, that recognises the common humanity in all and our rights afforded to all under the South African Constitution

| Teresa Wright | I agree this is a very sad case and the United Nations need to get off their fat lazy backsides and do something about this. After all the money they get for doing hardly nothing while the rest of us suffer in silence. | |
